Deconstruct and Reconstruct Kenya – Nairobi Region Press Statement

Deconstruct and Reconstruct Kenya

Press Statement

Preamble

The NCCK Nairobi Region has held a two-day meeting at Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) to reflect on governance and electoral state of the region and the nation. We were inspired by the scripture recorded in Isaiah 43: 19

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert, and streams in the wasteland.

Appreciating that whenever a nation becomes unsustainable, God reconstructs it so as to preserve life and wellbeing of the people, we do note that Kenya is now ripe for deconstruction and reconstruction.

1.         The Kenya We Dreamt of

In the National Anthem, we affirm justice as the core foundation of the nation when we pray “justice be our shield and defender”. To expound on this, the Constitution of Kenya 2010 in Article 10 (2) outlines the values and principles on which Kenya is to be founded as a nation. These are patriotism, national unity, sharing and devolution of power, the rule of law, democracy and participation of the people; human dignity, equity social justice, inclusiveness, equality, human rights, non-discrimination and protection of the marginalized; good governance, integrity, transparency and accountability; and, sustainable development.

This is the Kenya we all aspired for. But is it the Kenya we got?

2.         Kenya Is Sick and Dying

Regrettably, Kenya has turned away from these values and principles. Justice has been trashed, and as a nation we sadly fit in the description of a dying nation that is given in Isaiah 1: 21 – 23

See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice, righteousness used to dwell in her – but now murderers! Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chasse after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.

In every survey we have assessed, more than 85% of the residents in Nairobi and Kiambu counties are depressed and unhappy, with cost of living being their biggest mental challenge as they feel poorer than they were last year. As a result, 78% rate performance of the government as below average and poor, and 83% say the country is heading in the wrong direction. Is there need for more data to show that Kenya is sick and dying? We appeal to Kenyans to hear the call of God in Revelation 3: 2 – Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die.

To heal our nation, we recommend the following actions to cast out the disease and create a new nation.

3.         Hold Constitutional Commissions and Offices Accountable

Without doubt, the death of justice in Kenya is due to the abdication of duty by the 13 independent commissions and offices that Kenyans established in the Constitution of Kenya 2010. The subjugation and capture of Constitutional bodies, including the Judiciary and Legislature, by the Executive is the pathogen that is spreading death of our nation like gangrene. We encourage all Kenyans to put the leadership of these bodies under pressure to account to the people. Let us ostracize any and all commissioners who chose to facilitate corruption and injustice, always reminding them the scripture recorded in Proverbs 10: 7

The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

4.         Register As Voters

Kenya is a constitutional democracy, meaning that we elect our leaders through elections. We call upon all the citizens who have attained the age of 18 years to take the step to register as voters in the ongoing exercise. For all the youths who have been kept waiting for their National Identity Cards for months we encourage you to speak out and demonstrate if that is the language the Registrar of Persons will understand. Do not be hindered by the narrative that the elections will be rigged, for if we all register and turn out to vote, we will deal with any who attempts to do that.

5.         Stop Scanning Irises

We have noted with anger the decision by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to hinder Kenyans from registering as voters by insisting that scanning the iris is mandatory. This contravenes the provisions in the Constitution and the Elections Act which indicate that scanning the iris is optional. What is the rationale for this requirement? What does the IEBC want to do with the people’s biometrics? We challenge the Chairman of the IEBC, Dr Erastus Ethekon, to tell Kenyans the truth. Do not be like the people described in Psalms 52: 3

You love evil rather than good, falsehood rathe than speaking the truth.

Further to this, we demand that the IEBC devolves the voter registration centers to the ward and polling station levels. We must not use distance to block Kenyans from accessing their constitutional right to vote in elections.

6.         Occupy the Church

Traditionally, the church in Kenya has been the foundation on which champions for justice and democracy stood to redeem the nation. We welcome the youth, who since 2024 have accurately diagnosed the disease afflicting our nation, to come into the church. The churches under the NCCK umbrella are ready to walk with the youth in this journey of deconstructing and reconstructing the nation. Let us be inspired by the scripture in 1 John 2 :4

I write to you fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

7.         Refuse to Be Trafficked by the Government

We find it a very bitter insult on Kenyans that the only thing the government can boast about is trafficking Kenyans to the Middle East to be exploited and tortured as menial workers. Why is the government killing industries and businesses in Kenya so as to impoverish the people then send them to slavery? Let us all join in demanding that senor government officials who are benefitting from this slave trade be held to account.

8.         Address Mental Health Challenges

Mental health in Kenya is in a bad condition which must be addressed urgently. More than 30 people are reported to be committing suicide daily due to the psychosocial pressure that Kenyans are living in. We appeal to all psychologists and counsellors who are willing to offer free or very affordable services through our churches so as to help our people cope with the stress we are experiencing. Let us help our people to remain healthy long enough to transform the nation.

9.         Recall Members of Parliament

We remind Kenyans that the Members of the Parliament, both the National Assembly and the Senate, are the frontline facilitators of the injustice and destruction of our nation by being used by the Executive to pass unjust laws. Let all Kenyans who are willing take advantage of the provision in Article 104 of the Constitution. We must all determine that any person who voted to pass an unjust law is no longer qualified to be elected as a leader in Kenya. On their part, we challenge the Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies the warning in Isaiah 10: 1 – 3

Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do on the day of recking, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?

10.       Audit The Affordable Housing Levy

We call upon the Auditor General to undertake a thorough independent audit of the Affordable Housing Levy. How much money has the government collected from the people of Kenya? Where is the money and what has been done with it? How many houses have been built and to whom have the houses been sold?

11.       Audit the National Debt

The biggest economic problem facing our county is the ballooning public debt, which currently stands at KShs 12.6 trillion, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 67.3%. It is a greater tragedy that much of this debt has been taken illegally, without the approval of Parliament as is required by the law. Further to this, we remind Kenyans that Section 50(6) which was inserted into the Public Finance Management Act in 2012 reads:

A public debt and resultant financial obligations incurred by the national government is a charge on the Consolidated Fund, unless the Cabinet Secretary determines, by regulations approved by Parliament, that all or part of the public debt is a charge on another public fund established by the national government or any of its entities.

What this amendment did, dear Kenyans, is that it allows for debts to be borrowed and not passed through the Consolidated Fund. This has allowed the government to borrow in the name of Kenyans but not account to the people of Kenya and even hide details of loans from the Auditor General. We demand for immediate revocation of this provision so that Kenyans can be well informed of what they are paying for.

On their part, we demand that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund stop issuing more loans to Kenya. Kenyans are already overburdened with tax and cannot afford to pay more. It is a reality that today, salaried Kenyans are giving the government more than 56% of their income through direct and indirect taxes, which is increasing the poverty in the country. Where will money to service your loans come from?

Conclusion

We conclude by reminding ourselves and all Kenyans our nation is at a critical moment. We cannot continue the way we are. We must radically transform or else we will perish. Let us be inspired by the bible in Isaiah 65: 17

Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered nor will they come to mind.

We must all join hands in building a new Kenya that is founded on justice and the national values and principles outlined in the Constitution.

We now wish you all a a Jesus-centered Christmas and a God-filled and blessed New Year 2026.

Signed on this 18th day of November 2025 at YMCA Conference Hall, Nairobi.
