CornerstoneTrust

In partnership with CornerstoneTrust – NCCK implemented the Masol Peace Project in West Pokot. The Project centered around fostering peaceful coexistence and harmony within pastoralist communities through transforming livelihoods and enhancing community development. Forums conducted were aimed at reducing the prevalence of resource-based conflicts in Turkana and West Pokot Counties by fostering collaborative peace initiatives among pastoralist communities, addressing drivers of conflict such as resource scarcity, small arms proliferation, and mistrust, and promoting alternative livelihoods, traditional communal grazing systems, and access to spiritual and psychosocial support

Key aspects of the programme

  • Community-Driven Peacebuilding

The project peace forums underscored the community's strong commitment to dialogue and reconciliation. Initiatives driven by the community, such as beadwork and beekeeping, reflected a genuine sense of ownership, which was essential for ensuring the sustainability of the efforts. Collaboration among peace champions, church leaders, and local administrators was instrumental in building trust and fostering unity within the community.
  • The Indispensable Role of Community Leaders in Local Peacebuilding

A key insight is the pivotal role played by Community elders, church leaders, and peace champions in peacebuilding efforts in addition to the collaboration with local administrators. This is due to their influence and the respect they command within their communities. Their active involvement not only fosters trust but also enhances the credibility and effectiveness of conflict-resolution mechanisms.
