Fashioning Livelihoods
A Fashion and Design bootcamp has started today with 28 young people from Nairobi’s 20 sub-counties.
The participants were excited as they shared their dreams of gaining practical skills to improve their abilities and network with others in the field.
Among the skills taught is body measurements, pattern drafting, fabric preparation and cutting, seam allowance, stitching and seam construction.
In addition, they are being trained to handle, assemble and service sewing machines.
A key innovation in the training is use of technology and Artificial Intelligence in developing fashion concepts, designs and promotional materials.
“This bootcamp enormously expands the livelihood options for the mentees,” explains Dennis Kirimi, the NCCK youth mentor coordinating the exercise. “We anticipate that the young people will start or expand businesses in the fashion sector which will earn them dignified livelihoods.”
The fashion and design skills bootcamp is part of the Vijana2Thrive project being implemented by the NCCK in partnership with Swahili Pot Hub, E4Impact and Mastercard Foundation.
