FECCLAHA

In partnership with FECCLAHA, NCCK convened interactive workshops with community members which focussed on conflict resolution and peacebuilding, within the Kerio Valley community to influence reduction of the flow of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).

  • Empowering Communities for Extractive Justice

With funding from FECCLAHA, communities in the Fluorspar Mining Areas of Elgeyo Marakwet received capacity-building support to advocate for justice concerning long-standing issues. These issues included inadequate compensation, insufficient environmental restoration, and unfair labor practices stemming from previous mining operations. Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the Mining Act (2016) and the recommendations outlined in the Fluorspar Taskforce Report. Crucially, the initiative facilitated the establishment of a Community Development Agreement (CDA) committee, a vital step towards fostering equitable relationships between the community and any new mining investors.
  • Promoting Legal Literacy and Land Rights:

In Kajiado County, FECCLAHA's support enabled crucial stakeholder forums in Magadi, an area significantly impacted by Tata Chemicals' mining activities and escalating human rights concerns. These discussions culminated in submitting a formal petition to the Kajiado County Government and the National Lands Commission. The petition specifically advocated for the recognition of land rights in Magadi and urgently called for the prioritization of public awareness campaigns on the Mining Act 2016 and the Community Land Act 2016 for communities residing in mining areas and those affected by the broader extractives sector.
