KELIN

The Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network (KELIN), the primary partner for the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), has been instrumental in advancing healthy food policies in Kenya. Since 2024, with funding from GHAI, KELIN partnered with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to implement the National Healthy Food Advocacy Project. This project focused on advocacy and public education, raising awareness about the critical need for policies restricting the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children and for mandatory front-of-pack labelling (FOPNL) grounded in scientific evidence. The NCCK conducted outreach through its congregations, with religious leaders disseminating information on food environment policies and healthy eating during worship services. These efforts aim to encourage healthier consumption patterns and contribute to the reduction of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Kenya

Healthy Food Advocacy Project

Project Highlights

  • Congregational level Awareness and Outreach innitiatives

The Healthy Food Advocacy Project was a national project. Advocacy and Public Education were done through congregational-level awareness and outreach initiatives, where religious leaders delivered the message on food environment policies and healthy eating at the pulpit during worship.
  • Interactive live talk shows

The NCCK also facilitated the religious leaders for the interactive live talk shows on local /vernacular radio stations on the food environment policies and healthy eating. This increased the reach to more people since the radio stations have a high listenership.
  • Congregational level messaging

The congregational-level messaging has increased knowledge on healthy eating and public awareness of food policies, which will propel advocacy with legislators.
