UNHCR

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution or war at home.

Urban Refugees Assistance Programme (URAP)

Since 2013, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), with funding from UNHCR, has been crucial in delivering vital healthcare services to refugees living in Nairobi and surrounding areas through its Urban Refugee Assistance Programme (URAP). This initiative addresses the unique health challenges faced by this vulnerable population

Key aspects of the programme

  • Comprehensive Healthcare Services

URAP provides essential primary and secondary healthcare, encompassing reproductive health, preventive measures, and outreach programs specifically designed for urban refugees. The program also facilitates critical referrals for tertiary care in Nairobi from the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps
  • Collaborative and Sustainable Approach

URAP partners with other UNHCR agencies to ensure refugees receive holistic support and protection. Furthermore, the program collaborates with government and faith-based health facilities to promote sustainability and actively advocates for the inclusion of refugees in national health programs like the Social Health Authority (SHA), formerly NHIF.
