World Environment Day Marked in Athi Ward
The NCCK has spearheaded the marking of 53rd World Environment Day in Athi Ward, Kitui County, in an event that brought together stakeholders including Kamakis, KEFRI, Hand in Hand, One Acre Fund, schools’ 4K Clubs, environmental champions, clergy, local leaders, and community members.
Inspired by the day’s theme #BeatPlasticPollution, Deputy County Commissioner Anthony Ayuku observed that “Plastic pollution is choking our rivers, farms, and ecosystems. It’s our duty to protect our environment by using plastics responsibly and restoring our landscapes.” Ayuku, who was represented by Sub-County Assistant County Commissioner Anthony Nyongesa, urged the community members to embrace tree planting.
NCCK-trained Environmental Champion Kadogo Mwema emphasized collective responsibility, rooting recycling, tree planting, and rejecting single-use plastics.
On her part, Kilawa Assistant Chief Monica Munyalo thanked the NCCK, Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), and the United Church of Canada (UCC) for their support in making Athi greener. “I call on residents to apply the knowledge from NCCK’s environmental trainings. Change begins with us,” Munyalo said.
Joseph Mbinda, a community environment champion, praised NCCK’s conservation efforts, highlighting their distribution of tree seeds, donation of seedlings to households, churches, and schools, and support for 4K Clubs.
The event climaxed with planting of trees and inspirations for the community to green their farms and schools.
