NCCK Supported WRUA Qualifies for Registration

The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has confirmed that the Water Resources User Association (WRUA) whose formation was facilitated by the NCCK in Athi Ward is ready for registration. This follows the adoption of a name and election of officials for the Association by the members.

Known as Kithasyu Water Resources Users Association, the group this week elected Justus Mwovi as Chairman, Timothy Musyoka as Vice Chair, Purity Muema as Secretary, and Juliana Mbatha as Treasurer. Viginia Mutunga and Francis Mbaluka were elected Vice Secretary and Vice Treasurer respectively.

“We want the community to own and care for their water sources. When people are involved in managing the resource, they become more responsible and protect it for future generations,” said an excited Aaron Mulwa, WRA officer at Kibwezi.

By registering with WRA, the Kithasyu WRUA will comply with the requirements of the Water Act 2016.

The Kithasyu WRUA brings together more than a 1,000 residents of Katilini and Monguni sub-locations who live along River Athi. Through the Association, they committed to ensure the water resources in the area are used fairly, wisely and sustainably.

The WRUA was formed in May after community sensitization and training by the NCCK in partnership with the WRA as part of the Nature Positive Food Systems Project. The projected is funded by the Canadian Food Grains Bank through the United Church of Canada.

With a goal of empowering the communities take charge of managing water sources, the Kithasyu WRUA will develop a Sub-Catchment Management Plan, monitor the availability and quality of water in the area, protect the environment around the river and springs, and resolve water use related conflicts. This will be in addition to educating the community members on water issues.

To ensure the WRUA’s success, the NCCK will take them through a training on their roles and responsibilities.
