Turkana County Residents to Get Water

Turkana County Residents to Get Water

NCCK’s commitment to transforming lives is going a notch higher with the drilling of a borehole that will impact the lives of more than 2,500 households in Morulen Ward, Turkana County.

The households, who depend on the seasonal Kerio River, frequently suffer water scarcity and have to travel long distances in search of the crucial commodity. This has limited their capacity to engage in crop agriculture and restricts the number of animals they can keep as livestock.

All this is set to change, as was attested by an elated Eliud Merimug, a community leader. “NCCK has trained us well on agriculture and improved irrigation methods, but without water the skills we have gained would not fully benefit us,” he explained, adding, “This is why we are so excited about this borehole. It will enable us to cultivate high-value crops such as soybeans, groundnuts, watermelons and butternut crops.”

Eliud was among more than 500 residents who attended a ceremony to witness the handing over of the borehole site to the drilling company. The community currently has 500 cows and 1,000 goats and sheep, which will greatly benefit from the borehole.

The drilling of the borehole is being undertaken under the Turkana Resilience Project, which is supported by the Mennonite Central Committee.
