NCCK, Meru County, Agree to Collaborate
The NCCK will collaborate with the County Government of Meru to address the socio-economic challenges facing community members. The collaborative efforts will especially be in the areas of agriculture, health and countering Gender Based Violence and early pregnancies.
The agreement was reached when the Meru County Coordinating Committee paid courtesy call on the County Governor, His Excellency Hon. Rev. Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia.
“Every area of priority you have highlighted is aligned under some department within the County government”, Governor M’Ethingia observed, “which means that we can handle these issues together”.
He further commended the NCCK for role the church plays in promoting good governance, peace and cohesion in the community.
The officials from the NCCK were led by Bishop Dr Nicholas Mutwiri, the CCC Chairman, and Ms Jeniffer Ciomaua, the Regional Manager.
Bishop Dr Mutwiri, who also serves as the chairman for NCCK Upper Eastern Region, urged for concrete action to address teenage pregnancies in the county.
“Teenage pregnancies are a crisis in Meru”, he pointed out, “and we are asking you in the county government to support the church to organize mentorship programmes during the school holidays.”
The Council in addition committed to partner with the county government in consultations to mitigate the tragedy of mental health challenges. “The rising cases of depression, stress, substance abuse and suicides are a concern to us, and we are working with our member churches to enhance access to counseling services”, Bishop Mutwiri informed the Governor.
The two parties agreed to promote meaningful public participation in the county as a first step in the collaboration.
