Condolence Message on the Passing On of Rev Canon Prof James Kombo

The passing on of our dear brother and champion of the faith in Jesus Christ, the Reverend Canon Professor James Owino Kombo, has shaken the hearts and minds of the entire NCCK family. When we received the message that Professor Kombo had rested, our hearts joined with that of King David as we recalled the lament he uttered in 2 Samuel 3: 38- “Do you not realize that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel this day?”

Professor Kombo will always live in our hearts and minds, and we will cherish the memory we have of him as a systematic theologian, academic leader, passionate disciple of Christ, genuine lover of God’s people, and a humble pilgrim committed to practical demonstration of godliness. We will miss Professor Kombo with a pang in our souls for all days.

All through his adult life, Rev Canon Prof Kombo was devoted to the growth of the Kingdom of God by grounding ministers in systematic theology. It is this passion for ensuring that preachers and teachers of the Word of God are knowledgeable and well equipped that drove him to rise to the pinnacle of managing St Paul’s University and Daystar University, the leading Bible-based universities in Kenya. There is no corner of this nation that he has not touched through the students who have benefitted from the stable, focused, growing and people-centered management of these apex institutions.

Integration of faith and learning will forever be Rev Canon Prof Kombo’s shining legacy, while the many books and articles he published will continue to nourish the minds of seekers of faith.

For all of us in the NCCK, we commit to continue to pray for Madam Pamela and their children Leonida, Phillip and Samuel. Knowing that the pain of sorrow is deepest in your hearts, it is our prayer that the word of God recorded in Philippians 4: 7 will come true to you:

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Please receive our heartfelt condolences.

Nonetheless, we are comforted by the Word of God that even though we mourn dearly for our departed brother, Reverend Canon Professor James Kombo is in a much better place. The Bible assures us that the death of such a great warrior in the Kingdom of God is not an accident, but a call home when they complete their work.

The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart;devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightlyenter into peace; they find restas they lie in death (Isaiah 57: 1 – 2).

May we all find solace in knowing that Professor Kombo, whom we looked up to for all the many reasons, has rested in the hands of our Almighty God, and we will join him when our time comes.

May the peace of God be with all the family, friends, colleagues and all those who were touched by Professor Kombo as we go through this challenging moment of accepting that he is no longer with us.

Thank you

Rev Canon Chris Kinyanjui

GENERAL SECRETARY
