Nairobi Residents to Petition Governor
Citizens residing in Nairobi County have resolved to petition Governor Johnson Sakaja seeking relief from rampant corruption and poor service delivery.
The residents, who gathered during the Nairobi County Action Group meeting held at Ufungamano House earlier today, asserted that the cycles of bribery that characterize the city must be broken.
“Corruption is driving very high level of injustice in this county”, lamented Ronnie Kathuri, adding: “If you can’t bribe, the county government treats you like trash and denies you all your rights”.
The 46 participants, who were drawn from the different sub-counties of the city county, were mobilized by NCCK, Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), and Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM). The majority of the participants were youth.
Other issues they will include in the petition to the Governor include a demand for expansion of sewer lines and improvement of the drainage system.
“Anyone coming to put up a high rise building must be required to show how their waste water and sewerage will be managed”, Mwanahamisi Omar recommended, noting that this will help avert frequent floods experienced due to the outdated colonial-era drainage system.
The County Government will also be called upon to promote technical education by subsidizing studies in TVETs (Technical and Vocational Education Training) to equip the youth with income generating skills.
