Kenya’s democratic system is founded on constitutional principles of accountable leadership, equal participation, free and fair elections, and respect for the rule of law. Yet the growing influence of money, political patronage, misinformation, and informal power networks continues to weaken these principles. Religious institutions occupy an important but increasingly complex position: they remain highly trusted and influential while also facing exposure to political interference and financial co-option.
Against this background, the NCCK, through the Angaza Project, commissioned a study to examine how money and religion influence political participation, electoral processes and democratic outcomes in Kenya. The study generates evidence to support civic education, safeguard the independence of religious institutions, promote inclusive participation and guide interventions that strengthen democratic integrity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The findings are presented in two complementary publications. The first, the Popular Version, is presented under the theme “Pulpit, Politics, Pay-out, Power” and communicates the principal findings, statistics and recommendations in concise and accessible language for citizens, congregations, young people and communities. The second, the comprehensive Study Report, presents the detailed methodology, evidence, analysis, conclusions and recommendations for policymakers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, researchers, development partners and other governance stakeholders.
